IN the coming weeks, Maritzburg Echo will be publishing the history and profiles of some of the clubs under, or who have played in, the Edendale Football Association (EFA).

This week we look at Maritzburg
Panthers. The team, referred to as
“Panthers”, was founded by Thuthukani Mbona in 2006 and is based in Emvundlweni with Sphamandla Ndlovu in management.

The 15-man squad is coached by
Thuthukani’s brother, Ndumiso.

The team’s accolades include winning four local cups last year and runners-up in the EFA league for the 2010/2011 season.

Their best-performing player is striker Lindokuhle Mbenje, in jersey number 5.

“He is currently our team’s best-performing player because in 11 games he has scored nine goals, making him a creative player and our top goal scorer,” said Thuthukani.

Panthers are currently 16th on the log and Thuthukani said the side aims to end the first half of the season in the top 10. “Our goal is to finish the league in the top three.”

He said their long-term goal is to be promoted to the super league.

One player plying his trade in the
national first
division, who comes from Panthers, is Sanele Ndlovu.

Thuthukani said although the side is still without a sponsor and relies on assistance from benefactors, they want to be the best soccer team in the EFA that comes from the Ngaphezulu area.
