THE passport competition that is aimed at encouraging schools to visit museums was officially launched last Wednesday at Old Prison Museum.

The competition commenced last Wednesday and it will end on September 28.

It takes place for the eighth time this year and is run by Msunduzi Museum, KwaZulu-Natal Museum and Old Prison Museum. For schools to participate, they must visit the museums mentioned where they will receive a passport which will be stamped every time they visit. The prize for this year’s winner is R20 000.

Chief public relations and marketing officer at KwaZulu-Natal Museum Viranna Frank said they are hoping to have more schools participating this year.

“The aim of the competition is to create awareness of these museums and to draw more visitors to the schools, offering programmes that are aligned to the curriculum assessment policy statements.

“We are able to add value to the lessons taught in the classrooms at all three museums, covering a range of topics including natural science and history, relevant to all grades up to and including matric,” she said. She said last year they had 27 schools participate and this year they want to double the number.

Last year’s winner was Rise and Shine Junior Primary School from Imbali.

The competition is open to pupils from Grade R to Grade 12.
