PASTORS throughout the northern gathered together to celebrate Youth Day and educate the youth on June 17 at Protea Grounds in Raisethorpe.

In its 15th year running, the Gathering Grounds is an initiative started by various pastors who seek to entertain and educate the youth through games and various events in honour of Youth Day.

Event organiser and pastor Lee Rajah said that this year the event brought together over 40 churches and saw close to 3 000 people attend in what he deemed as the only youth celebration for the northern areas.

“This youth event is to teach our youth and also show them that they can have fun without the use of drugs and alcohol, which so many of them have begun indulging in.

“It is also to celebrate them and show them how important their lives are,” said Rajah.

Amongst the guests were police officers as well as prisoners who were on site with a makeshift prison cell to show and teach the youth about the dangers and consequences of their decisions. Many of the youth in attendance participated in the soccer and volleyball tournaments on the day, and various other games.

“It was a huge success and we definitely will be doing it again next year. We hope to house even more people with more things available to entertain and teach our youth,” said Rajah.
