“WE don’t need a petrol station - we need residential accommodation.”

This is how College and New Scotland road residents feel about the proposed petrol station and car wash Msunduzi Municipality wants to build on the corner of these roads.

Residents say that having a petrol station in the middle of a residential area and between two schools - Pietermaritzburg Girls High and Maritzburg College - will create additional traffic there.

Residents say this development will also bring noise and other activities, and safety will not be guaranteed.

A concerned resident, who owns a business in College Road, Justin Maskell, told Maritzburg Fever that residents oppose the development.

“A lot of people will be affected by this. This is a residential area and people who live here will be affected because the noise coming from the car wash and filling station will run 24/7.

“Maritzburg College boys also live next to where they want to build this development, they too will be affected,” says Maskell.

He said traffic on these roads will double or triple if the development is approved.

Maskell said the proposed area used to be residential before the municipality evicted the tenants a year ago.

“The proposal states they want to merge the three blocks of flats into one.

“We don’t want a petrol station and a car wash, we want accommodation as this is a residential area.

“People who live here are close to town and there are many petrol stations near this residential area.

“Businesses in the area will also suffer because the proposal plans indicate there will also be shops in the development.”

Resident Ronel Koen said she is also unhappy as the petrol filling station will be right in front of her house.

“I will be smelling petrol day and night, and the car wash will create a lot of noise and taxis will park here all day long,” she said.

She has started a petition and more than 100 Scotland Road residents have signed it.

Last Friday Msunduzi Municipality called a public hearing with residents to discuss their concerns, but the meeting was adjourned to November 17.

“We don’t want a petrol station and a car wash, we want accommodation as this is a residential area. People who live here are close to town and there are many petrol stations near this residential area.
