WHAT IS LISTERIA BACTERIA?

Listeriosis infection is a food-borne bacterial illness that can be serious for pregnant women and people with impaired immune systems. Listeriosis is most commonly contracted by eating improperly processed deli meats and unpasteurised milk products.

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and sometimes nausea or diarrhoea. If infection spreads to the nervous system symptoms such as headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions can occur, but infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness.

TREATING LISTERIA BACTERIA

Treatment varies depending on the severity of the signs and symptoms. Most people with mild symptoms require no treatment. More serious infections can be treated with antibiotics. During pregnancy, prompt antibiotic treatment may help keep the infection from affecting the baby.
