THE tragic fire that ravaged through the Edith Benson Baby Home in Durban has sparked a fire in the hearts of Pietermaritzburg residents, fuelled by business owner Rajeeve Sookdeo, who has embarked on a campaign to collect consumables, clothing and accessories in support of the home.

The home was dealt a shocking life-threatening blow last week Monday when a fire broke out. Fortunately, firefighters and paramedics responded to the emergency swiftly, leaving no casualties or injuries.

Ever since then, Sookdeo, who has a special place in his heart for the children’s home, has pursued relentlessly the cause of gathering necessary items from those willing to donate.

“These are babies who really need our help in their time of need and I know that things are tight but if people could just buy one item extra whenever they buy baby things, that would go a long way,” said Sookdeo.

Sookdeo said that at the end of every week he will be driving down to Durban to deliver the items collected over the course of the week.

The drop-off point for the items is Sookdeo’s business premises, World of Tools, on Balhambra Way.

“I have approached various institutes and people but the response hasn’t been that great at the moment and we are hoping donations will pick up,” said an optimistic Sookdeo.

He added that plans are under way to rebuild the home soon and should anyone wish to help they can contact him at 084 724 8960.

Any of the items listed below can be donated and delivered to the drop-off point.
