PIETERMARITZBURG was brought to life and filled with colour this weekend as the first Color Run came to the City of Choice.

The event, hosted at Epworth School, saw almost 2 000 participants heading out the school on a looping run through the neighbourhood before returning to Epworth to cross the finish line.

With four colour stations positioned along the route, participants enjoyed a brisk walk with family, friends and children and every so often got sprayed with colours by The Color crew who were waiting for them as they passed through the station.

Taking in the atmosphere, participants hopped, skipped and ran through the colour stations, some even taking the time to roll in the colour.

Residents along the route and the public came out to show their support for the participants, who danced and sang through the streets during the event.

At the end of the race, participants got together where more colour spraying was enjoyed, but this time by each other. While MC Damon Beard and event organiser Trevor Latimer threw colour packets into the crowd, participants got ready to throw their colours in the air, and on each other.

This was the first time the Color Run has been to Pietermaritzburg after establishing itself as a fun festival around the country and being dubbed the “happiest 5kms on the planet”.

With almost 2 000 people who came out to enjoy the fun, event organisers said they will be back next year.

“We were delighted with the success of our first Pietermaritzburg event.

“The event went off without a hitch and the feedback has been upbeat and encouraging. All we can say is that we look forward to returning next year,” said Latimer.

He added that the race was not about the fastest runner crossing the line first.

“It was about getting out, meeting people and having an absolute blast, with a bit of fitness thrown in.”
