WITH 32 participating teams (16 boys’ teams, 16 girls’ teams) the PMB High Schools Football Association Cup is the biggest high school football tournament in Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands and possibly the biggest co-educational tournament in the country.

The annual tournament is a highlight on schools’ sports calendar and the trophy has become the coveted prize for the 1st teams of these schools.

As such, it has raised standards on and off the field for high school football in the region.

A couple of players, such as Bandile
Shandu (Maritzburg United), Ryan Moon, Brylon Petersen (Kaizer Chiefs), Ayren B
ond, Lungile Msomi and Qiniso Mahlobo (Mthatha City) have gone on to professional careers after playing in the tournament.

Other players have been offered football and academic bursaries by scouts and coaches from higher institutions.

Moon still holds the top goal scorer record with seven goals scored in the 2013 edition.

The tournament features a group stage on day one, with teams then being split into “Cup” and “Shield” knockout sections for day two.

This year’s tournament is being hosted by Howick High School, on August 26 and 27.

More than just winning, however, the FA Cup has also become synonymous with bringing together boys and girls from various schools, backgrounds and cultures for a weekend festival of football.

There are a few places left for high schools wanting to enter.

They must contact the tournament organiser, Dan Haswell, on 083 792 3668.
