SINGING along to Robbie Williams, one of his mother’s favourite singers, in the car was when Matthew Gardiner fell in love with music and began singing.

The Maritzburg College matriculant always had dreams of entering Idols and walking onto the stage for his audition this year was affirmation that he was born to be a performer.

Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Gardiner said at his first audition, when he was only six, he was told he could not sing.

“I think that really sparked the start of my love for music, because I really wanted to prove that I could.”

In Grade 2 he auditioned for the choir at Merchiston Preparatory School and by Grade 7 was appointed as captain.

“By then I had also started learning guitar. I chose guitar because I used to sit and watch my dad play, and I wanted to be able to do the things he did.

“I asked for a guitar for my birthday and my parents thought that was a great idea. The weird thing is, I started on an electric guitar and I have never had any formal training for guitar or singing. Everything I know how to do is something I have taught myself,” said Gardiner.

His biggest musical influences are Matthew Mole, Mumford and Sons, Majozi and John Mayer.

“They have all had a massive impact on me, each in their own unique way. I think in my music you can distinctly hear how each of them have affected me,” said Gardiner who described his music as a folk-indie vibe, with a hint of a rock undertone.

Maritzburg College also identified his talent and awarded him a cultural bursary which, in turn, gave him many opportunities to pursue his musical career.

“Thanks to the guidance of Mary-Ann Hartley I got to take part in numerous musical productions, sang at many prize-giving ceremonies and events, got to be one of the opening acts for Prime Circle, Just Jinjer and Plush and become the school choir captain for 2014.”

After finishing school Gardiner has played at various venues in the city including, Scoozi and Beanbag Café and has played at Music in The Hills.

“I have also been an opening act for Matthew Mole in Baynesfield, Majozi at the Just Jesus Session New Year’s Eve concert and Desmond and the Tutus in Pretoria and have played a few times at Arcade Empire in Pretoria.

“Music is my life, and it is my biggest dream to have a career in it. I feel like my music is very relatable because it is full of my life experiences and things I have learnt because I believe music is a journey.”

He explained that auditioning for Idols was a humbling experience.

“Getting a golden ticket meant that I got to take a step closer to my dream. I am looking forward to the journey ahead of me and working with people with a lot of experience in the industry because their help is invaluable to somebody trying to break into the music industry,” he said.
