PIETERMARITZBURG student teacher and songstress Nomalungelo Khumalo has been selected in the top 16 of SA Idols, season 12.

The 21-year-old, who survived Idols “hell week” auditioned in Durban and won the judges over with her rendition of Jennifer Hudson’s And I Am Telling You at Theatre Week at the Wild Coast Sun.

Khumalo, currently doing her Bachelor of Education at Unisa, said at her first audition she was motivated by her pupils at Maritzburg Christian School to enter the competition.

According to her profile on the Idols website, she is also a member of the band, Acoustiq Assassins.

“I auditioned because the band I sing with and the children I teach encouraged me to chase this dream and pursue it and I thought, ‘let me give it a try to see if South Africa will love me’.”

She said she was looking forward to the whole Idols experience.

“I’m looking forward to being behind the scenes and being in front of the camera, so please vote for me.”

She said her biggest challenge in the competition thus far has been looking after her voice before performances.

“The biggest challenge has been preserving my voice. During Theatre Week there’s been a lot of singing and activities we do, so preserving the voice is hard.”

Khumalo is one of six contestants representing KZN this season.

On Sunday the first group of eight top 16 finalists will have to persuade the viewing public that they deserve a spot in the top 10. Host, Proverb, will explain how the voting process is to work.
