THE Soccer Kids Academy U11 team completed a remarkable “double double” by lifting the Durban Central Local Football Association (DCLFA) Cup on Saturday.

They had already been confirmed as the DCLFA U11 league champions a few weeks earlier, but what makes this a unique achievement is that the team are from Pietermaritzburg and won the Maritzburg Districts Football Association (MDFA) league and cup double in 2016.

“After winning the MDFA league and cup in 2016 without even drawing a match, we discussed with the parents that for the players’ development we needed to push them and find new challenges “said coach Dan Haswell.

“So we decided to enter the DCLFA league this year. This meant that the team would have to travel to Durban for matches and that of course, would be an extra challenge in itself for the boys.

“It was good for them in that the competition was stronger and although we won the league, we did lose a couple of games and in a way that is what we wanted for the team – for the boys to experience that and to test their resolve.

“The cup competition was also tough on the boys because it had been a long season for them, but again, they showed great determination and will-to-win by winning both the semi-finals and the final on penalties.

“They really are a talented bunch who are keen to learn and they play with such style that they draw positive comments whenever they play. We plan to keep them together for a few years and who knows where it might take them?” said Haswell

The team completed the league season with 11 wins from 14 matches, scoring 53 goals and conceding six goals. - Supplied.
