BESIDES wanting to be a doctor Pietermaritzburg’s top maths pupil wants to help pupils who struggle with maths in his spare time.

Saiful Molla (18), from Athlone was announced the top maths pupil under Umgungundlovu District at Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban recently.

Matriculant Saiful from Carter High School received 97% for maths and will be studying medicine at Wits University this year.

Saiful told Maritzburg Fever he has been the top maths pupil since Grade 10, but never thought he would be the top pupil of the district.

“When I was told I would be getting an award at the ICC I was surprised because I was never told for which subject. When my name was called for the maths award, I was excited because I love and enjoy maths.”

He said he is planning to help other pupils who struggle to understand it.

“Right now I am researching how to become a maths tutor because I heard there are programmes for people who recently passed matric.

“I know it won’t be easy getting started in my first [varsity] year, but it is something I want to do. It might not be this year, but I will do it.”

Saiful said the Class of 2018 pupils mustn’t hate maths, they must try to understand it.

“If you understand it and enjoy it things will start getting easier. Maths is not as difficult as people think, you just need to spend more time with it.”
