Poet aims to uplift her fellow artists

IN a bid to uplift young and upcoming artists and give them a platform to showcase their talents, a local poet has started a non-profit company called Imbenge Yamasiko.

Twenty-year-old Naleli Mofukeng, who lives in Imbali Unit 3, told Echo that she had a vision about the organisation in 2017 but it only started working last month.

“The whole aim of this company is to give artists and poets a chance to showcase their talent and give them and their music a platform on which to grow.

“I will be hosting events during the school holidays to accommodate those who are still at school. Every artist will get a chance to be part of that particular event.

“Artists will also get a chance to be part of the company if they want and release songs and albums under this company.

“I am looking to work with children between the ages of 16 and 25 however, if there are younger children who want to take part, they are more than welcome [to join the company] but I will have to get a permission from their parents,” she said.

Mofukeng aims to uplift artists in Pietermaritzburg, Impendle, Bulwer, Underberg, and Stepmore.

Apart from giving artists a platform, she said the company will also be teaching them about tradition and customs.

“There is a lot that our youth needs to learn when it comes to tradition.

“I went to initiation only to find out that it was interpreted incorrectly and I was not supposed to go through it. My life was put on hold because of something that did not even matter, but because I did not have any knowledge I went ahead with it.

“I do not want other youngsters to put their lives on hold due to a lack of information and let their talent go to waste,” she said.
