Poet hosts festival to give pupils uniforms

2019-03-27 06:00

IMBALI poet Syanda Mncwabe (23), known as “Siyanda Iqhawe”, will host the Usiba Arts Festival to raise money to purchase school uniforms for underprivileged children. Now in its second year, the festival will take place at the Imbali Unit J Hall on June 22 at 10am.

Mncabwe told Echo he could relate to children who come from poor families and who other people often look down on.

“Growing up in a location, I noticed that some people tend to look down on children who don’t have a uniform and seem to forget we all come from different backgrounds. I want to change that.

“I want every child at school to feel comfortable without being teased,” he said.

He said he plans on hosting this festival twice this year in order to be able to assist more children from schools around Pietermaritzburg.

“For now I am targeting the schools in Dambuza. I have identified two that will benefit in June (Sanzwili Primary and Nyonithwele Secondary School). I have asked teachers to identify at least four pupils in each grade who are in dire need of uniforms.

“This is my way of giving back to the community. I save the money which I make from poetry gigs to host the festival. My father also assists with his own money as well,” he said.

Artists who would like to perform at the festival are urged to register prior to the event at a cost of R50.

The entrance fee is R10 per person.

Mncwabe is also looking for sponsors who would like to assist in this initiative.
