SWEETWATERS poet Bongani Khumalo is in the spotlight once again after being nominated for the Phusha Kleva Awards, being held in Port Shepstone on June 22.

Khumalo (28), known as Mbulazi Obhala Kahle Igagu Lembongi, is nominated in four categories this year: Best Poet Artist, Best Male Poet, Best Mentor and Best Author.

Speaking to Echo, Khumalo said he is delighted that he has been nominated again this year.

Last year he was nominated in two categories (Best Poet and Best Male Poet) and he won Best Male Poet.

“Being nominated in so many categories this year shows that people are noticing my work and that my work is growing.

“I feel so honoured by these nominations. They motivate and encourage me not to stop but to push harder until I reach the top,” he said, adding that his dream is to motivate and help young and upcoming poets not to give up on their dreams.

“What I have noticed is that many poets are giving up on their talent and I do no want that to happen.

“My wish is to see them grow and become big one day. They need to know that being a poet can change your life for the better,” he said.

Khumalo also revealed that he writes short stories, which he reads every Saturday on Umgungundlovu FM. He said that is why one of the nominations is for Best Author.

“I have written three short stories already and I recently released a new poem titled Izibe leyonto. I want to change people’s lives using poems and my short stories,” he said.
