Poet vying for awards

BORN and bred in Elandskop, Khokhwane area, Bongeka Mafahleni well known as “Mafahleni Wesizwe” has once again been nominated for KwaZulu-Natal Capital Maskandi Awards and has made it to the top three.

Mafahleni, who started doing poetry while she was still in primary school, is nominated for Best Poetry. She has been nominated for this category for the third time in a row, as she was nominated in 2016 and 2017 and she won the awards.

The awards will be held on September 29 but the venue is yet to be confirmed.

Speaking to Echo she said she is very honoured that she has once again been nominated and she intends to win again with the help of her fans. She said when she received the news that she has made it to the top three last week, she was so excited and did not even know what to do.

“My fans helped me make it to the top three by voting for me.

“I am very grateful for the support and I would like to encourage them to continue voting for me so that I can bring the award back home again. This is not my award but it is for my fans and Pieter­maritzburg citizens,” she said.

Mafahleni is up against Bhekabasembo Christian Mkhize and Skhuza Shanduka.

She said she knows that the competition is tough but she is hoping that she will win.

“I feel like a winner already that I have made it to the top three but I also do not want to disappoint my fans who has done their best to put me in the top three.
