ELANDSKOP born poet Nduduzo Mkhize made the City of Choice proud when he won at the South African Traditional Music Awards (Satma) at the ceremony that was held in North West on Saturday.Known as “Gubhela”, Mkhize won in the category of Best Poet.Speaking to Echo, he said he still does not know how he feels. He said that although he has been in the industry for over 10 years this is his first big award that he has won so far. “I can still not describe how I feel. I do not even know how to react to the news because of the excitement. Although I feel that I have worked hard to be where I am today, I never thought that I will win such an award ... “I am so grateful. What I love the most about the award is that it forms a part of history even when you are no longer a poet but you work will always be remembered,” he said. However, he said he does not want his work to be defined by the award but he wants it to be defined as touching people’s love in a positive way.“Awards is just a gesture of appreciation that ‘Gubhela we see you and what you are doing in the community’.”He said when his name was announced on stage for a moment he stood up and walked towards the exit door for no reason.“I was so shocked I could not believe it. I eventually went back to the stage and accepted an award. “I would like to thank everyone who voted for me and everyone who is supporting me. I am so grateful to everyone. Please continue supporting me,” said Mkhize.Besides being a poet, Gubhela owns a company called Gubhela Brands which aims to help young up-and-coming artists. He said he plans to grow his company so that he can assist more young people.
