HOPEWELL poet Eric “Ntatheli wasemazulwini” Phetha will host the first South African Poetry Awards which will be held at Imbali Unit 13 on November 23 from 6 pm to 6 am.

These awards are aimed at encouraging and honouring poets from all over the country.

Speaking to Echo, Phetha said since he started doing poetry 12 years ago he has always been thinking of hosting the awards for poets only. “We have a lots of awards that are always happening but we do not have any for our own poets who are doing great. We have music awards and sports awards but nothing for us. The only thing they do is to have that one category of poetry and that is it.

“With these awards I want to show that poetry is as important as other genres in the entertainment industry. Poetry needs to be respected and poet needs to be honoured for their hard work,” he said.

Phetha said he has always felt that poetry is being undermined as poets are hardy invited to entertainment events. “Throughout my career I have 34 awards and I have travelled the province of KwaZulu-Natal and represented it, but I have always felt that we are not getting the attention and the respect that we deserve as poets.”

He said people have already nominated their favourite poets who they think they deserve to win. The nomination period was from April 1 to April 30. The voting lines are now open for people top vote for their favourite poets.

For more information on the nominees you can contact Eric Phetha at 060 399 9049.
