TWO Copesville Secondary School Grade 10 pupils were awarded trophies at Usiba Writers’ Guild event at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban for their outstanding work in poetry.

Copesville creative arts teacher Zakhele Hlatshwayo said that Nhlanhla Ngubo and Nkosingiphile Majozi are exceptionally talented poets.

“They are very good at reciting poems and the best part is they are not trying to imitate anyone. They write their own poems and that elevates their creative thinking. I introduced creative art as part of extramural activities at the school so that pupils can do well academically.

“Winning the awards means a lot for our school. It symbolises that our school is one of the top schools with pupils who are creative. The school is very proud of them,” said Hlatshwayo.

Nhlanhla said he is excited about being awarded the award.

“I love what I do and have participated in national poetry competitions since I was in primary school. Whenever I look at this award I am reminded there is something I am good at and I am reminded of the hard work I have put in,” said Ngubo.

Nkosingiphile said he never knew there were other pupils who loved poetry as much as he does at Copesville Secondary School.

“I thought I was the only one who loved poetry. After I spoke to him [Hlatshwayo] and recited some of my poems, he introduced me to Nhlanhla. We write the poems together and perform them as a duo. I would not say this award is mine. It belongs to my teacher because we are grateful for everything he has done,” said Majozi.
