ONE of the biggest and oldest sport shops in Pietermaritzburg, Poobie Naidoo’s Sports, recently donated second-hand equipment to the Panorama Community.

“There are a lot of players who train everyday around the Panorama Primary School grounds but most come from disadvantage and underprivileged families,” said Poobie Naidoo.

Ward 34 community activist, veteran sports journalist and sports organiser Jerry Barnes said Naidoo’s donation will make a lot of things easier and will help the children in the process.

“We have a lot of children involved in sports, playing soccer and athletics but can’t afford the basic gear like boots and running shoes which is why we are so thankful to our good old friends at Poobie Naidoo’s Sports for their kind donation,” said Barnes.

One of the development junior coaches in Panorama, Thobani Dlamini, said that all the players were very excited when items were delivered to them.

“We were all caught unexpectedly and by surprise. It was encouraging and an emotional moment to see those juniors receiving boots, shoes, skipping ropes and even t-shirts,” said Dlamini.

“We are very grateful to Poobie Naidoo’s Sports and Barnes for making us happy.”

Naidoo said whenever it is possible he will always help and encouraged customers not to throw away unwanted sports items and rather donate them.

“We keep a box at the main entrance to encourage our customers to donate sports equipment instead of throwing them away,” he said.
