Preserving a monument

EX-POLICEMAN and soldier Frank Uys, from Woodlands, wants to erect a proper fence to surround the World War monument in Woodlands for coloured soldiers who served in both World Wars.

“This monument serves as a reminder of all those who gave their lives in the wars in the name of freedom,” said Uys.

Uys, who works tirelessly with the Woodlands Community Watch group, said that it was sad to note that the area surrounding the monument was not being properly taken care of. He decided that a fence surrounding the area would help establish a way to keep the area clean.

“In order for us to erect a fence so that our former army men are respected we need to raise significant funds and therefore we will be hosting a fundraiser for this cause,” said Uys.

The Woodlands Ex-Servicemen Fundraiser Dance will be held in remembrance of fallen heroes and will be hosted at the Woodlands Community Hall this Saturday from 6.30 pm.

“These soldiers that we are doing this for are the ones who fought in Egypt and kept the Germans at bay and from infiltrating Africa.

“This monument was specifically built in Woodlands because most of these soldiers who fought there moved to Woodlands once the war was over,” said Uys. Call 072 432 7581 for tickets.
