PUPILS at Siqongweni Secondary in Imbali Unit 13 last Wednesday received 82 chairs and desks, donated by the University of Pretoria.

The arrival of the desks and chairs marks the end of pupils having to stand or kneel for lessons.

The school governing body treasurer, Sthembiso Khoza said the shortage of chairs and desks was a result of theft and vandalism, a matter which was reported by the Maritzburg Echo last year.

“We have since upgraded our security by erecting a new fence, installing burglar bars on doors and increasing our security personnel to ensure the school’s assets are protected.”

He said seeing the plight of pupils who had to take lessons in unfavourable conditions, the school governing body and the senior management team approached the university with a request for chairs and desks.

“It is difficult for disadvantaged schools such as ours to get hold of much-needed assets such as chairs and desks, which is why, as a school, we are grateful for the donation,” he said.

A university representative, Fana Sekgote, said the institution is pleased to donate the chairs and desks.
