WITH November being National Diabetes Month, the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church in Woodlands held a Health Expo called “Bringing Hope to Your Home”, recently, which was hailed a great success.

SDA youth leader Vasie Hammond said the church was started in May 1863 in the United States, and the expos were started in 2000.

“We received great help from Flowpath Laboratory, which donated all the medical items.

“Flowpath Laboratory is economical in terms of its prices, and it stepped in to help further, even sending staff to provide a free service for people who can’t afford it,” said Hammond.

The expo offered free health screenings to residents, which included blood pressure and diabetes screenings, health age tests, cardiovascular fitness assessments, health counselling, massages and more.

“South Africa is one of the unhealthiest countries in the world, especially in terms of non-communicable diseases [lifestyle diseases] escalating out of control in our communities.

“This awareness and prevention programme assisted the community by making them aware of the health issues,” said Hammond.

She also said that the Seventh Day Adventist Church is humbled to be called to serve people, and stressed that the church would be irrelevant in the community if it did not care about the wellbeing of the local residents.

Hammond said the Seventh Day Adventist Church is not only concerned with the spiritual wellbeing of the community, but also their physical, mental, emotional and social wellbeing.

“A healthy life is everything,” said Hammond.
