Pupil abuse - justice must be served

2016-08-24 06:00

I REFER to your article, dated 19 August - “Teacher on the run”.

I recall when we were training as teachers and wore our Bechet College of Education uniforms with pride. You were acknowledged in the community. A sense of pride towards teachers was held. I do hope that pride still exists. However, these latest reports are just utterly shocking and unforgivable.

We are entrusted with the most precious gifts - children. We are their “parents” for most of the day. We form bonds with them. In 22 years of teaching, I have never thought of or felt any reaction of such horrendous magnitude towards children.

I cannot begin to fathom out what goes on in these perpetrators’ minds - the trauma caused to their victims and families. The damage and broken spirits of these we call our children.

Surely, a harsh sentence needs to be metered out and their names put on a data base which the Department of Education needs to circulate.

No to abuse of pupils. No tolerance towards colleagues who behave in this manner. No to bringing down the name of a profession I hold close to my heart. Justice must be served.
