FOLLOWING the KwaZulu-Natal Museum’s speech competition hosted in August, a team from the museum along with the five lucky pupils who won a trip to the Robben Island Spring School left for Cape Town on Friday, September 20.

The competition was open to Grade 10 and Grade 11 history pupils from schools under the uMgungundlovu District. They were challenged to prepare a speech on the topic of “To what extent has South Africa achieved its democratic dreams or aspirations in the past 25 years?”

Only 15 schools confirmed their participation. Pupils selected for the Robben Island Spring School include Zenzwezinhele Khumalo from Uminathi College, Sanelesiwe Memela from KwaPatha Secondary School, Amanda Radebe from Richmond Combined Secondary School, Njabulo Mbili from Cool Air Secondary School, and Thobeka Mahaye from Injoloba Secondary School.

KZN Museum’s public relations officer, Viranna Frank, said the Spring School is a residency and flagship programme of the Robben Island Museum which started in 1998.

“Each year, a theme is tailored to address pertinent issues affecting the youth of South Africa. All nine provinces in South Africa and Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries participate and pupils are identified by different government departments and various institutions.

“The learners are expected back in the province at the end of the school holiday,” said Frank.
