ORGANISERS of the inaugural KZN Capital City Marathon recently revealed the sponsors of the race at a media briefing held at the Golden Horse Casino.

This follows after the marathon was officially launched in September 2019.

Relieved to have over 11 sponsors, the chairperson of the KZN Capital City Marathon, Steve Mkasi, said although the donations that sponsors made differ, no sponsor is more important than the other.

“The provincial Department of Sports and Recreation is one of the sponsors, alongside Deloitte, Poobie Naidoo Sports, Msunduzi Municipality, Netcare 911, Simi Healthcare Solutions, CTM in Pietermaritzburg and Newcastle, Umgeni Water, Coca-Cola and Khayelihle Funeral Parlour,” said Mkasi, who added that the race would not be possible without all of their sponsors.

The president of Athletics South Africa, Aleck Skhosana, who was also present at the briefing, said this event will be the province’s flagship event.

“It is important for a city like this one to have their own marathon. We are hoping that the race will grow to eventually get the support of the district municipality and provincial government,” said Skhosana.

The president further encouraged athletes across the province to support the marathon.

The KZN Capital City Marathon, which will take place on February 23, will host runners from Kenya, Britain and the U.S. as well as runners from across SA.

The race, consisting of three distances (10 km, 21 km and 42 km) will be a qualifier for the Two Oceans and Comrades Marathons. It will start at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall and end at the Athletics Stadium.

The much-anticipated marathon is being organised by four local athletics clubs, namely: Maritzburg City, Phuma KZN, Amaqhawe, and Abasubathi.

Sane “The Lion King” Mbanjwa, the official KZN Capital City Marathon ambassador, said she is looking forward to the race.

“I am excited about the marathon. It will be my chance to qualify for the Two Oceans Marathon,” said Mbanjwa, who also admitted that there will be stronger and faster runners than her competing.

“Yes, there will be runners who I look up to but I am going to stick to my plan, drink lots of water and give the race my all,” said Mbanjwa.

Race director Sihle Shange said they are ready for the marathon.

“There are about 2 000 people who have entered already — our target is 8 000 runners for the race. There is still time for athletes to enter. They can do so by visiting www.capitalcity42.co.za,” said Shange.

The 21 km and 42 km races will start at 5 am and the 10 km will start at 7 am.

Prizes to be won include cash prizes that range from R750 to R 10 000.
