PIETERMARITZBURG Columba Leadership Alumni in association with the Msunduzi Municipality engaged in a community awareness session and clean-up day for the community of Imbali unit 18 on Saturday.

The aim of this initiative was to engage and educate the community members about the importance of keeping the area and environment clean.

The initiative was headed by Kwanele Sangweni and Sphephelo Ngcobo.

Sangweni said they decided to start this initiative because they saw that the community was struggling with waste disposal and that they are not educated when it comes to climate change and the effects of pollution (water, land, air) on the climate and weather patterns.

“The whole aim was to raise awareness about cleanliness and taking care of the areas that we live in. We started with the community clean-up campaign where we went around and cleaned various illegal dumping sites and the streets. We then proceeded to the community hall where we had our session with different speakers from different organisations,” he said.

Sangweni said this was their first of many initiatives.

He said there if there are organisations who want to partner with them in future for initiatives like this they are more than welcome.
