WINNING the Redbull “Lift as you Rise” competition in Cape Town was just the next step in her journey to greatness for Pietermaritzburg rapper Zama Madlala, better known as “Deekay_Did_It”.

The competition, which afforded Madlala the opportunity to record with Nasty C, was another rung on the ladder of success as Madlala looks to establish herself as one of the upcoming artists to watch in the music industry.

No stranger to the industry, Madlala has achieved various accolades over the years, having featured in the top 12 of the Vuzu Hustle season one and having been signed by DeLazy Entertainment shortly after.

“I was part of the group Klutch Kollective but the group disbanded early in 2017 and since then I have been a solo artist,” said Madlala, who recently graduated in the study of radio production.

From a young age, Madlala recalls that she listened to a lot of Busta Rhymes and found that her flow was influenced by him.

A basketball lover for most of her life, Madlala said that it was an accident where she injured her right arm that pushed her towards music and, in 2007, she found herself behind a mic on stage. “I got behind that mic and I was home. “It was then that I became really hungry for success and decided to mould my craft,” said Madlala.

Madlala was the runner-up in the Cassper Nyovest Gusheshe remix competition. She was also part of indie label Lucid Records. “My style of music is unique, to say the least, and I still maintain my old school flow on new school beats,” said the rapper.
