THE construction of an RDP house allocated to the Ngcobo family in kwaZayeka, Sweetwaters, was completed after Maritzburg Echo ran a story about the situation.

The incomplete house, which at the time of publishing, needed a roof, doors and windows, and its unfinished state emerged after large parts of the family’s old home, built with mud and zinc, collapsed during bad weather on September 29.

Makhosazane Ngcobo told Echo that the collapse of the old house left the family of four with only one room to live in.

She said at the time she had been at work when she received a call that the house had collapsed and had to go home to attend to the emergency.

When she arrived she found that the doors and window frames to complete the RDP house, which had been kept in the old house - had been stolen.

The RDP house had been in a state of incompletion for two years. Her husband had asked the contractor about the delay in completing the house, but didn’t get any viable answers.

When the old home collapsed, the Ngcobos contacted Echo to try and get help since they did not have enough room to live in due to the incompleted RDP house.

“A week after the story was published two gentlemen came to us and told us that the RDP house would now be completed,” Ngcobo said.

Once completed the family were told they could move in even though an assessor is yet to approve of this and the official handover is done.

“I’m really happy because the old home that collapsed had a leaking roof and it was small,” she said.

A community member living in the same area as the Ngcobos, Ntokozo Ntsikithi said: “I would like to pass a word of thanks to Echo because by bringing the matter to the public’s attention it was quickly resolved, but there are six other community members whose RDP houses are incomplete.”
