THE international community has rallied together to raise funds for Pietermaritzburg’s very own, Kayl Symons who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis.

Donations followed after a lady named Sarah Mazoue, who has known Symons for her whole life, took it upon herself to get out and raise the necessary funds.

According to Mazoue, the 22-year-old is in need of a bilateral lung transplant and is currently being assessed.

“The family will be needing to raise funds pre- and post-transplant for various medical expenses, such as oxygen, un-registered antibiotics, travel to and from Johannesburg and post transplant care.

Kayl will be needing to relocate to Johannesburg for up to a year,” said Mazoue.

Mazoue went on to highlight that because Symons cannot work due to her very low lung function, she will be needing assistance in all areas including accommodation.

Further explaining that at present, they are uncertain as to what medical aid will cover as a bilateral lung transplant is considered elective surgery.

“We are, however going to fight them all the way,” said Mazoue.

She described Symons as an incredibly strong young lady, adding that getting donations will help her concentrate on getting well and not having to worry about the financial burden that comes with facing this dreaded disease.

Mazoue explained that rent in Johannesburg ranges from R6 000 per month and a portable oxygen is R970 per month,

Registered antibiotics are R2 500 per 10 days and various medical bills as and when they arise.

Also, Mazoue published a plea on the backabuddy crowdfunding site clearly stating that the fundraising target is R100 000.

Donations from in and out of South Africa to date are sitting at R78 817.
