THE Retired Police Officers club continues to grow, and this past weekend saw the admission of two new members in the form of former captain Frank Uys and Sada Pillay, who both joined the social club over the weekend.

The club, which celebrates the careers of retired officers and seeks for a way for all retired officers throughout Pietermaritzburg to meet and socialise with one another after years of service, also will celebrate the birth of one of its oldest members, Warrant Officer Mike Nagamuthoo.

Nagamuthoo will celebrate his birthday on August 29, with the Maritzburg Fever previously covering his career in law enforcement in our August 29 edition in 2018.

He worked in Mountain Rise Police Station in 1968 and thereafter was posted to the Guard Unit in Cape town until his retirement in 1992.

One of the main facilitators of the social club, Logan Govender, said that Nagamuthoo was one of the few members of the club in their 80s that are still alive.

“Being over 80 years old is an exceptional feat amongst former police officers as they were normally faced with numerous challenging and stressful situations during the course and execution of their duties, which left them vulnerable to the many illnesses and afflictions in consequence of their work circumstances,” said Govender.

Nagamuthoo and his wife recently travelled throughout Europe and the East and credits his secret for longevity down to exercise and good dieting.

Govender said all retired police members are welcome to attend their meets, which take place every second Saturday of every month at the Chistlehurst Academics and Arts Hall on the corner of Moses Mabhida and Campsdrift Road.
