SOUTH African National Taxi Council (Santaco) KwaZulu-Natal, in partnership with Clarendon Transport Underwriting Managers (CTU), hosted a competition where they tested the driving skills of the top taxi drivers in the province. The competition was held at Mkondeni Testing Centre on Saturday.

The top 10 taxi drivers, as voted for by the community, were judged based on their driving skills on the road on a daily basis.

At the event, drivers went through a theory test and practicals and the top three were chosen. These drivers will be revealed in March where the winner will receive R10 000. Second and third place will receive R5 000 each.

The other seven contestants were given recognition certificates and R1 000 each. Mondli Zondi, an Imbali 3 and J Taxi Association driver, represented Umgungundlovu District in the competition and made it to the top five. Zondi has been a taxi driver for 11 years.

Speaking to Echo, Zondi said being in the top five has motivated him to go back to the taxi rank and encourage other drivers to do their best in keeping the community safe and obeying the rules of the road.

“Being voted in the top 10 was good enough for me to know that I am doing something good and people are noticing as they voted for me. I feel so happy and honoured. This competition has taught me a lot of things about being the driver that transports the community everyday.

“It reminded me that I have to place the safety of the passengers first all the time. It was my first time being in this competition but I would love be a part of it again in the future,” he said.

Santaco provincial office manager Sfiso Shangase said the aim of the competition is to encourage drivers to be their best on the roads.

“The community started voting for these drivers in October last year. We believe that the best taxi drivers that are doing well need to be rewarded so that even those that were not doing well can be encouraged to change their ways.

“We are so proud of these drivers that have made it to the top 10 and we would like to have more drivers like them,” he said.

Bipin Bhagwan, head of sales and marketing at CTU, said they are very honoured to be part of such a great initiative.

“Taxi drivers are not being recognised for the contribution that they are making in our communities everyday. They play a critical role in the community. They deserve to be honoured, celebrated and acknowledged for their huge responsibility,” he said.

Ayanda Ngxongwana from the Department of Transport said they have always had a good relationship with Santaco and they encourage this kind of relationship.
