Ridge Primary School celebrates 50 years

EXCITEMENT was high at the recent celebration of Ridge Primary School’s 50th birthday last Friday, with teachers and pupils having a fun-filled day of birthday celebrations.

Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, principal Ann Dudley said the day was very special to the children and staff.

“This was a very special day. We wanted to start by celebrating it with the pupils as they are the most important part of our school. Playing is essential for children and we want them to feel special and part of the legacy.”

Dudley, who has been a teacher at the school for 30 years and took over as principal in 2010, said there are more celebrations to come throughout the year with the next one taking place in the second term.

A long-serving teacher at the school, Ronalda Klota, said that Ridge Primary School has “moved with the times” and evolved as the years have gone by. “It’s very different from what it was when I started 35 years ago. Back then, we used to have a small number of pupils. The premises were just not enough to have many pupils. The school has developed and now fits well for the new generation.

“One thing that has never changed is the love, respect, passion and good spirit of the staff here. I love the children, and the parents’ support has been fantastic over the years,” said Klota.

Melissa Climpson, a former pupil who is now a teacher, commended the school’s management, staff and parents. “It’s a loving and caring environment that you just don’t want to be separated from. I did Grade 1 here 24 years ago and now I’m glad to be a teacher here. It has been a great journey and I’m glad to be part of the history, both as a pupil and a teacher.”
