Road deaths - time to take action

2016-01-27 06:00

SADD sends its condolences to the families of the 1 755 people killed on the roads.

This increase was expected and predicted by road safety NGOs.

There is no time to sit back and moan about the roads, taxis and other drivers.

Now is the time for each person to take action and join us by following the Decade of Actions logo of “Together we can make a difference”.

How: -

• Become a volunteer.

• Speak to and educate the public, parents, SAPS and everyone about buckling up in the back and front, as is the law and the safest thing to do (manual and educational DVD available free from Sadd).

• Report dangerous driving or unroadworthy vehicles to 0861 400 800.

• Learn more about alcohol and drunk driving on www.sadd.org.za or basic road safety on NGO site www.arriveal ive.co.za

• Raise funds by giving up alcohol for February - see www.alcofreefeb.co. za

• Refer victims of drunk driving to Sadd for support.

We ask the Department of Transport and traffic officers to concentrate on proven practices that reduce death and injuries, such as testing for drunk driving 24/7, 365 days a year; having traffic officers on duty 24/7, enforcing seat-belt use in the front and back, removing unroadworthy vehicles from the road and penalising unsafe passing, etc.
