IT is thought that road rage was the cause of an incident which left hotel manager Farhad Manjoo dead and another man injured in an shooting incident that occurred over the weekend.

Manjoo, after finishing his shift at the Kismet Hotel, was with friends on his way to view a décor job that one of them had completed when they allegedly got into a scuffle with some men on the corner of Pietermaritz Street and Peter Kerchoff Street in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Two shots were fired, one of which penetrated Manjoo’s chest, killing him instantly. A second man was also injured and is currently receiving treatment in a local hospital.

Manjoo’s brother, Shiraz Manjoo, said his brother was not a fighter.

He said they were informed, through reports, that he [Manjoo] had his arms wide open, suggesting that he was not looking for a fight, when the shots were fired.

The rest of Manjoo’s family, who live in Johannesburg, did not take the news well and have since taken the necessary steps to come to Pietermaritzburg, arranging for an ambulance to transport his elderly mother Shantee.

Manjoo’s family spoke highly of him, saying that he was always protecting others: “He was multi-talented. He was always cooking and leaving a mess. He loved fishing and even wrote his own fishing book called So, you want to fish?” said Manjoo’s cousin Santosh Harrichund.

Bongani Mncwabe, who was charged with the murder of Farhaad Manjoo, appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday. In his bail application Mncwabe stated that, at the time of the incident, he thought he was going to be hijacked. The trial has been adjourned to July 13.
