RtL Africa Conference at GHS

2017-08-09 06:03

READING to Learn (RtL) South Africa is hosting its second conference at Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School from September 8 to 10.

The conference starts at 3.30pm on Friday, but attendees must arrive at 2.30pm for registration.

The theme for this year’s conference is “Learning to Write, Reading to Learn”.

Mike Hart from RtL SA said the conference trains teachers across all learning areas.

“We provide them with skills and knowledge to teach, not only the content of the texts pupils have to deal with, but also how to ‘old read’ and write them.

“What happens is that the content of text is only done orally in class and children face problems when they have to pick up books and read.

“This conference will help teachers to teach any curriculum with any language, from foundation phase up to university,” said Hart.

Hart said they are expecting over 100 delegates this year and are aiming to attract people who attended the first conference in 2015.

“In 2015 we attracted over 160 delegates and this year we hoping for at least 140, or more.”

The conference includes a practical workshop, RtL teachers sharing classroom experiences and a presentation exploring wider literacy issues.

Hart said RtL SA has been training teachers across KwaZulu-Natal since 2010. They have also trained teachers in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, to mention some.
