NASHUA, together with The Shadowball Academy, visited Maritzburg College last Tuesday to teach pupils rugby skills.

They were doing this as part of their second Nashua Rugby Skills Programme, where they visit different schools around the country to teach them rugby skills.

Maritzburg College, Alexandra High School, Ashdown Primary, Pelham Senior Primary and Merchiston Preparatory School were the five schools that attended the programme, with 105 pupils participating.

The programme is specifically for Grade 8 and Grade 7 pupils who have just started playing rugby. Nashua and The Shadowball Academy will be visiting 35 cities in 35 days where they will be teaching different school.

After six weeks they will revisit the schools to check which school in the country has the best skills.

That school will walk away with R30 000 in cash.

The Shadowball Academy founder Gary Crookes, said this programme is aimed at developing rugby skills in young people.

“Our mission is to get youth participating in a sport they love, not only to keep them active and healthy, but to allow them the opportunity to develop key skills they can use later in life.

“We want to develop and grow rugby, and use it to make a better South Africa. Rugby is unique, it is not just a sport but it teaches you communication, and how to abide by the laws at it has so many laws, and it teaches you how to stand up when you have been knocked down.

“These children have a tough journey in front of them.

“If they real toughen themselves up and stand up to the competition, they can go further in life after this competition,” he said.
