ON Sunday, before Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) president Julius Malema arrived to deliver his speech at the Edendale Lay Ecumenical Centre hall, ANC supporters barricaded the path he was expected to take on his way to the hall with burning tyres and rocks.

Malema had come to the centre to brief supporters.

Stones were thrown at the police who had come to stabilise the mood, and also at EFF supporters.

“Malema is not going to enter this area,” said an ANC supporter that threw stones at the EFF and police.

The police were armed and ready with rubber bullet firearms, but none were fired. One of the police officers was overheard saying, “These people are making it hard for us to work here.”

“If they want a fight we are ready to fight. What have we done now to the ANC? If they want a fight we are going to give it to them,” said an EFF supporter who was at the forefront when stones were thrown at them.

After the police arrived there was peace in the area and the burnt tyres were removed.

Once cleared, vehicles with people wearing ANC T-shirts inside drove around the area.
