LOCAL sports businessman, Poobie Naidoo, joined hands with Adidas on Thursday to donate top-of-the-range running shoes to underprivileged athletes in Pietermaritzburg.

In what was hailed as a community initiative to help local runners, Naidoo, who is a retired athlete himself, said he remembers how difficult it was to purchase sports equipment.

“I remember buying my first pair of running shoes for R50, which at the time was a lot of money and I had to pay it off over weekly instalments,” remarked Naidoo.

The initiative has been running for five years now and Naidoo has partnered with various brands over the years to give back to the community.

“We have had other sponsors before come on board and this year Adidas has been so kind as to join in on our campaign to ensure that Pietermaritzburg’s athletes are well serviced,” he said.

One of the recipients of the sports shoes was Perfect Dlamini, who has been running for Phuma KZN for four years and he was a very grateful man after putting on his new trainers.

“This is the first time that I am going to be using an Adidas running shoe so I am very eager to test them out as soon as possible. My next race is in October at Amanzimtoti so I am raring to go,” said Dlamini, who thanked Adidas and Naidoo for their generous donation.
