Safe City notes decrease in CBD crime over festive season

2016-01-20 06:00

SAFE City Pietermaritzburg recorded a decrease in crime in the Pietermaritzburg central business district over the 2015/2016 festive season.

Lucas Holtzhausen, director of Safe City, said an overall decrease in crime has been recorded this season, especially when it came to street robberies, which generally increase during this period.

“The decrease can be attributed to SAPS crime-prevention operations during the festive season,” he said.

Holtzhausen said there were no serious crime increases and no increase in car remote jamming, however there were cases where car windows were broken to gain access.

The main crimes reported to Safe City were street robberies and possession of suspected stolen property.

“Fighting in the vicinity of taverns remained problematic,” said Holtzhausen.
