UMGUNGUNDLOVU District officially launched the 2018 KwaZulu-Natal South African Local Government Association (Salga) Games at Greater Edendale Mall last Friday.

Salga Games takes place from December 7 to December 9. It involves 10 districts and one metro across the pro-vince.

This year’s games have 15 sports codes, which include basket ball, netball, soccer and rugby.

Nonhle Mkhulisi from Salga said they will not only be hosting games in Pietermaritzburg but will be also be celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Salga Games aim to develop local talent in different sports codes throughout KZN and was held at King Cetshwayo last year.

“We are promoting social cohesion, human development and giving an opportunity to youngsters to show case their talents in sport. We want our youth to be involved in sport.

We are expecting approximately 5 000 players for all the different codes coming from all over KZN,” she said.

“We find our great players through these games and this is where their talent is being recognised.

We are urging the youth to take this opportunity and grab it with both hands because you can develop yourself through it,”

Mkhulisi said not only will Salga help those who are involved in sports, but also contribute in the economy of Pietermaritzburg people as a lot of people will be staying in the city until these games are finished.
