AS part of the Santa Shoebox Project, on September 1 online pledging of shoeboxes will begin in the hopes of reaching as many children as possible and the Pietermaritzburg volunteer for the project, Nicola de Wet, is urging all Pietermaritzburg residents to get behind this special initiative.

Originating in Cape Town in 2006, starting with just 180 shoeboxes, the Santa Shoebox Project has grown immensely since its establishment and has since donated to 858 673 underprivileged and disadvantaged children.

The shoeboxes are distributed to more than 1 000 recipient facilities each year, through more than 60 satellites around SA and Namibia.

The success of the project can largely be attributed to its personal nature — donors give gifts of essential items and treats to children whose names, ages and genders are known. The minimum eight required items are a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, a wash cloth, sweets, a toy, school supplies and an outfit of clothing — all new, unused and age-appropriate.

“On September 1 online pledging of shoeboxes begins and we would love to reach as many children as we can,” said De Wet.

The project relies on an extensive network of volunteers across SA and Namibia, including people who give freely in terms of time, energy and expertise without receiving anything in return while also accepting sponsorships and backing from various corporate sponsors pledging monetary or pro bono support.

“Each shoebox is filled with educational supplies, clothing, toothbrush, toothpaste, face cloth, soap, a toy and some sweets.

We depend heavily on the public for these boxes and so would appreciate any help from the public going forward,” said De Wet.
