AFTER winning the Nelspruit Open Championships held on October 13 and having applied to participate in the African Judo Championships, local Judo whizz Chevonne Estherhuizen said that to her surprise she was selected for South Africa just days after her competition in Nelspruit.

“I fought ex-Polish champion Carolina Blom and champion of the Eastern Gauteng region, Nichelle Coetzee, in the tournament among a few other big names and placed first in the open weight division,” said Estherhuizen, who added that she won all her fights by “Ippon” — which is the highest score in Judo.

She said that just days after taking in her victory she was greeted by more good news after she was selected to represent South Africa at the championships, which will be held in Yaounde, Cameroon from November 24 to 25 this year.

“I was on top of the world when I heard that my application was approved. The championships is an Olympic qualifier and I feel like I am at least one step closer to achieving my Olympic dream as I will be competing against some of the best players in the world,” beamed Estherhuizen.

Eager to compete on the international stage, she said that the experience gained at the championships held in Nelspruit will help her prepare for her upcoming fights in Cameroon.
