NZUNZWENHLE Primary School in Azalea has been granted the title of a health promoting school by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health.

The school was officially announced as a health-promoting school last Thursday at an event that was held at the school’s premises.

Thulani Chapper, who is the Health Promoting Officer in uMgungundlovu District, said they have more than 50 schools under uMgungundlovu District that fall under the initiative’s banner.

He said that any school can become a health-promoting school, depending on social ills, school cleanliness and if school policies are being followed.

A score of 80% and over earns the school the title.

“We have ways of identifying the school based on five aspects, which are: skills, community involvement, school policies, school environment and the services that are being provided by the school.

“We look at the school and see if they meet all criteria before we promote them.

“The aim for introducing health promoting school programmes is to encourage cleanliness in the schools.

“We want to teach children while they are still young.”

School principal Thabani Shabalala said he is happy that the department has recognised them as a health-promoting school.

“It shows that the school is growing and developing. It is our mandate to develop children in our schools and in the area.

Programmes such as this, gives pupils the opportunity to learn about different issues regarding their health and safety so that they can grow up and become successful,” he said.

He said the school has gone through an intensive assessment with the Department of Health before they were recognised as a health promoting school.

“We passed the assessment because the school is clean, takes care of the environment and follows policies of cleanliness.

We are very pleased and we intend keeping our school clean and pupils healthy,” he said.
