PIETERMARITZBURG fashion lovers will be treated to a dazzling event at the city hall on Saturday as School of Fashion celebrates its 50th anniversary.

The spectacular evening is where style and creativity merge, and will feature collections of the first and second-year graduates.

In a press release the school said highlights on the runway include eco-chic designs, evening wear, haute couture and unique contemporary designs. An evening of unforgettable fashion, style and entertainment is promised.

The school’s owner and principal, Priscilla Bhika, has invented 54 different ways to drape a sari and her inventions incorporate influences from all parts of the world, including Egypt, Greece and Africa, etc.

“This has reintroduced our most elegant prized asset – the sari, to other cultures as well.”

Bhika is a prominent personality in the Indian community as well as a dedicated member of Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business, member of the board for Arthur Blaxall School for the Blind, member of Indlovu Partnership for Life Long Learning, in 1990 she was a finalist for Woman of the Year Award and an executive member of the CBF [consultative business forum].

She was among the award winners at the India Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Awards for Education and Culture. She has also received the 2001 National Arties award in honour of a person who has worked tirelessly to promote culture and education in South Africa, she also took part in SA Fashion Week. In 2012, Bhika was invited to the Miss India Worldwide Pageant in Suriname as the official designer for the pageant and in 2013, she was the official mentor for SA Fashion Week.

“Bhika is a perfectionist and instills this in her students, many of whom, own boutiques, are retail buyers for chain stores, are overseas showing their fashion, are working in costume for television series, have opened up their own CMT factories and are doing a superb job.

Others run their catering businesses from home or stitch, for example, sari blouses and clothes from the convenience of their home.

“This story started with one dynamic woman with a vision, who has worked tirelessly to promote culture and education in South Africa,” said the press release.
