Selective fines for PMB residents

2015-12-09 06:00

YOUR article titled “Businesswoman fined for illegal dumping” in PMB Fever of 2 December refers.

The selective fining of Naidu once again reinforces the municipality’s racist-based treatment of its ratepayers. About 1,2km down Burger Street, in Musukwana Street, there are huge waste dumps where people openly dispose of their garbage every day, causing an unbearable stink. But the same official who issued Naidu with a fine would not go and fine residents there. Why? He would collect 100 times more in fines daily but only if he is genuinely concerned about illegal dumping.

Soft targets are tackled, just as every weekend there are road blocks on roads leading into the northern suburbs. Road blocks and vehicle checks are very rarely held on the Edendale and Thornville roads.

The manager and his team would be well advised to treat ratepayers with equal respect. The more the municipality tries to project itself as non-racial, the more their very actions demonstrate the exact opposite.
