Senior citizens advised not to stay alone

SENIOR citizens from Pietermaritzburg are advised to avoid staying alone in their houses no matter how safe a place is believed to be.

This is after a 64-year-old woman from Bellevue was killed allegedly by two men whom she hired to help clean her yard on Thursday afternoon.

It is alleged that the victim was killed with a garden spade.

Alexandra Police Station spokesperson Captain Kholeka Mhlongo said it was not safe for elderly people to live alone.

“It is not safe for them [elderly] to stay alone, even if the area seems safe,” she said

“Crime is everywhere and the elderly people living alone are a target. We encourage people not to leave their old parents and relatives alone.

“In this situation we don’t even know what made these people kill the old woman. Maybe they saw that she was the only one at home.”

Mhlongo added that even when residents are hiring casual workers to help them in the yard or in the house, they must make sure that they do a background check.

“You must check all the information and ask for an ID. You must know where that person lives and a person next to you must also have that information.

“This will help a lot, if something happens to you someone next to you will have the information needed.”

Mhlongo also said that any suspicious activity must be reported to the nearest police station.
