RESIDENTS of two homes on Peach Road, Woodlands are at their wits end with the municipality as they continue to be plagued by an overflow of sewage in their yards and homes, with unsanitary items from the sewer along with faeces a constant visual in their daily lives while the unbearable smell has become part of the norm.

Since complaining about the problem the municipality has been to the homes once where they tended to the sewage problem by unclogging the manhole within the yard only for residents to complain that after half an hour of the municipality allegedly fixing the problem, the problem started again and this time it was even worse than before. Owner of one of the houses, Kenneth Charles, says that his tenants have since had to move all their belongings out of the house as the sewage has begun to flow in the house and has also started to seep through the walls due to the overflow.

“The house is flowing with sewage, the walls are seeping with it. This has been a problem for the last two weeks and they came through and unclogged the manhole only for the problem to get worse half an hour later,” said Charles’ wife, Ruth.

She said that the municipality needs to trace the problem to where it starts and needs to respond more urgently to their problems instead of them having to call the municipality numerous times to no avail.

Visibly upset and angry, Ruth said that her tenants have had to physically remove sewage from the house while mopping up to try and clean the house in a pointless cycle as the sewage continues to flow through thus leaving them to live in unbearable conditions while their belongings are stained with raw sewage. “This is not the way people should live and these are not problems which we can fix by ourselves. We need them [municipality] to come and sort this problems out properly,” said Ruth. The municipality failed to respond to queries regarding the sewage issues at the time of print deadline.
