AFTER attempting to have a sewer leakage problem attended to for over three weeks, a Northdale resident from Stork Road, Logan Padayachee, was pleased when representatives from the municipality arrived at his house to sort the problem out last Wednesday. However his happiness was short-lived.

“All they did was remove the sewage from my yard, which was clogging up for weeks, and they have now moved all of that sewage to the main sewage pipe which runs through our backyard,” said Padayachee, who added that it is only a matter of time before that becomes a problem too.

Padayachee said that his home had been experiencing sewage problems for the last month, of which they were in constant contact with the municipality about to no avail, until last Wednesday.

A sewage manhole which is situated in his yard, was, according to Padayachee, overflowing with waste, causing unbearable smells and waste to build up in his yard.

“The situation was so bad at one point that we were actually afraid to use our bathroom in case we contributed more to the problem at hand,” said Padayachee, who stated that he and his wife had to live in terrible conditions for the last month as calls to the municipality either went ignored or unanswered.

When the municipality finally attended to his issue, Padayachee thought that the problem would be solved but, to his dismay, he was told that the workers were only removing the sewage from his sewer and diverting it to another sewer line just outside of his yard.

“The waste wasn’t removed completely but merely just moved from our sewer line to the mainline, where I’m sure there will be more complications experienced along the line,” said a concerned Padayachee.

Padayachee also added that during the removal of the sewage, the toilet in his bathroom erupted, scattering waste across his bathroom, and the manhole in his yard overflowed as well, resulting in waste being dispersed across his yard, which is now littered with left over sewage as a result.

“My wife and helper have worked tirelessly in our bathroom, scrubbing all over to remove the dirt from the burst toilet while my yard, even though I have used a pressure cleaner, still has muck and waste all over it which my dogs have come into contact with now,” said Padayachee.

Padayachee said that he is concerned by the municipality’s efforts towards helping the city, citing that he was constantly told (when he got through to the municipality) that they are short staffed and, when they finally came to his house, they were without equipment needed for the job at hand.

Ward 31 councillor Rooksanah Ahmed said that residents experience no joy when trying to contact the municipality and often turn to the councillors who are then bombarded by residents.

“The reality is that sewer and water leaks are not being attended to and no action is being done,” said Ahmed. The municipality failed to reply to queries directed to them before the time of press deadline.
