Shocking increase in carjackings

CARJACKINGS increased by 215,4% in the Pietermaritzburg policing area and by 103.3% in the Plessislaer SAPS jurisdiction.

The Mountain Rise SAPS saw a 48% increase in carjackings with 17.5% in the Alexandra Road SAPS areas.

This is according to the official crime statistics for April 2016 to March 2017, which was released by Police Minister Fikile Mbalula to the Portfolio Committee on Police in Parliament on Tuesday, October 24.

The statistics also revealed that murders increased by 37.2% in the Plesslislaer policing area and 27.1% in the areas under the Mountain Rise SAPS jurisdiction.

However, murders decreased in other policing areas with the Alexandra Road SAPS area declining by 46.4% and an 11.8% decline in the Pietermaritzburg area.
